Even professional cyclists during ground tours continue to consume small portions of vegetables on most days to maintain gut health and normal bowel function.
Perhaps the most important lesson
From Elite Sports Nutrition.
Is that there is no universal fiber strategy.
Some athletes tolerate oatmeal.
Vegetables or legumes before training without any issues.
whereas others experience bloating or gastrointestinal distress after relatively small amounts.
Keeping a simple food and symptom diary can help athletes identify their personal tolerance.
and adjust meal timing accordingly.
But how much is sufficient or too much?
Current dietary guidelines recommend approximately twenty to thirty five grams of fibre per day.
Although many athletes fail to consistently achieve these amounts due to frequent travel, sports nutrition products, and repeated pre-raise low fiber phases.
Typical high fiber sources per 100 grams of dry weight include oats with around ten grams.
Berries with around six grams, lentils with up to sixteen grams, broccoli with around three grams and whole grain rye bread with up to nine grams.
Lower fiber foods include white bread with around two to three grams.
White basmati rice with two grams of
Watermelon with less than half a gram and tomatoes with under two grams, with peeling further decreasing the fiber content.
Oils, animal protein sources, and sugar are more or less free of any fiber.
In spOS nutrition products, there's a variation of fiber content.
Some products intended for easy training, like a porridge bar, can contain some valuable fiber, but products meant for high intensity training or racing should be low in fiber.
