They can sort of set a tone.

And it is a sort of formidable power with a small P just to be able to do things like, I mean, we just saw it with the with the King's State visit to the USA the other day, or with the late Queen's State visit to Ireland.

These are moments where

The monarch can do stuff.

that politicians just can't do.

It's it's to sort of reset the dial.

It's it's to sort of set a set a direction.

I mean, you know, that the the late Queen was not um a confrontational person, um, but she was one of the few people in public life who was very happy talking about her faith, for example.

Um and and I think she set a sort of a dialogue, a sort of a a a capacity for a sort of multi denominational, multi faith

Dialogue that you know it wasn't we we don't discuss very much, but I I I think and I've I've spoken to various faith leaders um in in the course of writing my books, and and they will say that uh the way that she would uh you know, she was often um the only major public figure in British public life who would be seen very happily chatting to uh to to to newly elected black leaders.

or religious leaders or Muslim leaders or whatever.

And that that sent a sort of subliminal signal of of sort of harmony, if you like.

So they do have these these powers.

They can um they can, you know, whether it's whether it's setting uh trends or I mean the the you know the king's uh lifelong uh devotion to um the planet, for example, um and it was deemed pretty

eccentric um when he started first started talking about pollution and the threat to the climate back in the 70s.

It's become a a an orthodoxy and and certainly I've seen him uh at things like uh the COP summit where you know people will come up to him and say we kind of got this whole thing going because he did he sort of set up a uh a a sort of pre-summit summit in 1990 in Brazil which led on to uh what was called the

the Earth Summit, which led on to the first COP summit, and now we're on to COP, I don't know, what are we on now, thirty or something?

Um uh you know, he's been there all along.

So um yeah, the the the the power is there in terms of influence.

Yeah, she she uh there is definitely a uh th there is as what they what you might call a negative power.
