People were treating Jared Goff, that second first round pick in the Rams trade, as the Lions having to throw in another one to take on Jared Goff's contract.

Jared Goff is a significantly better quarterback now than he was in 2021 when he got traded to the Lions.

A huge portion of that is him working with Ben Johnson over multiple years.

And Jared said that to me.

His understanding of the offense, the intention behind the offense, what we're trying to accomplish, why he's calling this play in this moment, that's something that built up over time, over hundreds of reps, over hundreds of hours and minutes of conversation with Ben and what he wants out of the offense.

This is an incredibly fertile situation for a young quarterback, what Caleb Williams is in right now.

He is one of, in my opinion, a top three play caller in the NFL and a truly difference-making special guy.

He has an incredible collection of young skill position players and an offensive line that even if there are more questions now than maybe there were last year, is a very good group.

I think that there really is no limit

to how good this group can be.

It's just a matter of the young guys improving enough for them to get there.

I think that's a fair assessment.

And that's not based on anything concrete.

I think that's based in just talking to people who have worked with him or know him and trying to get a sense of maybe where some of this stuff comes from.

Obviously, a lot of it is rooted in the LeFleur comments and how icy that relationship has been.

When that staff got fired when he was in Miami in 2018, I can't remember exactly where it was, but...

In 2019, he was out of the league.

He was coaching, whether it was in college or some other lower level of football, he was out of the NFL for a brief period of time.

And I think he got hired late in the process in the offseason in 2019 as a quality control coach.
