She wasn't one of the high society.

She was a mistress.

So she was depicted and considered in a slight different way.

But they're very effective paintings.

And she was very proud of particularly Emma as a Sybil.

And she actually retained this painting, the prime version of it, and took it with her on her travels.

And it had notoriety of its own and attracted people to her.

Yes, it's a much-loved painting in the Barber.

I think many people would say it's their favourite painting of our collection.

And it's certainly one of her most successful paintings made while she was in Russia.

I think there's no doubt about that.

It's a very engaging painting, above all.

The way that Golovina is posed...

She's looking at you straight on and you can't really escape her brown eyes.

They just bore into you.

She also holds around her body tightly a bright red wrap, scarlet wrap, which is probably a studio prop.

But it's done in a way that evokes, again, paintings by Rubens and Titian.

So she's evoking the old masters.

It's slightly sort of erotic, I suppose, in the pose, in the way that the body's so tightly wrapped like that.

But it's above all the expression that captivates you.
