My direct supervisor was a news editor, I guess, or city editor.

I was covering city council stuff and stuff that's really pretty boring.

I was the intern in the middle of the summer, so I was sent on the worst assignments.

And it was, like, pretty boring stuff.

But he was a really hard editor.

He had a little bit of a checkered past.

He was... I can't even remember his name.

But he was at several different other major publications, like big outlets.

And he basically got fired.

And so he came down to Columbus.

But he was...

He was a hard editor and he was like the old school, like, right.

He was probably in his like fifties at the time, skinny guy who smoked like two packs of cigarettes a day.

And he would go out the back and smoke.

And he was like that old school kind of news editor.

And he was really hard.

And I remember him telling me a line that I can never, ever forget because it didn't make sense to me at the time.

And it does now, which is I can always teach somebody how to write.

I can't teach them how to report.

And because reporting is work, hard work, and you just have to have that in you and you have to do it.
