And they actually had, within a month or so, they wanted me to move up and start working on their main daily news desk because I was doing weeklies, designing weeklies.
And that's when I got the job covering Auburn in Decatur, Alabama.
And said, you know what?
I got a choice here to make.
It was kind of like a career fork in the road.
And I've had a few of those for sure.
But that was one where it was like, okay, I'm going to stay on this path of newspaper design, or I'm going to go down what I always wanted to do, which is cover college football, a major college football and be a beat reporter.
And I decided to take the leap and do it.
And it's a good thing because newspaper design does not exist anymore, Kevin.
Oh, man, I know I said a lot about things that I've learned and jobs that have taught me a lot, and that one probably taught me more than anything.
It was, oh, man, it was just like getting thrown into the wolves.
That's what it sort of felt like.
I was surrounded by all these...
more accomplished, long-tenured sports writers.
And I didn't know what to think.
I just felt awkward and out of place and inexperienced.
I was only there a year because I moved back to marry my wife, moved back to Jackson.
And, um, but it was, you know, I put 50,000 miles in a year on my truck.
I had a little S10 cause I was living in Decatur, but I was mostly working in Auburn.
It's three hour drive.
