And the big difference there is between melanoma and the two carcinomas.
Melanoma is the skin cancer that can often become invasive and, you know, reach our inner organs and lead to death.
The BCCs and SCCs almost never become invasive.
They pretty much stay on the skin surface and they will grow bigger.
So you have to get them cut off and they're unpleasant for sure, but they very rarely lead to more serious health issues down the line.
But for most people, most people sort of conflate them all.
You hear that skin cancer is very, very common.
One out of five people will get it.
And you hear that melanoma is very deadly.
What people don't realize is that
Yes, melanoma is deadly, but it's not very common.
It only accounts for 1% or 2% of skin cancers.
The BCCs and SCCs are extremely common, but they're generally not a big issue.
These are the things that dermatologists cut off healthy 80-year-olds every day.
And it's not great.
My wife has had them and, you know, you get you've got a little hole afterward and it takes a few weeks for the hole to heal and it can lead to scarring in the wrong place.
So, you know, it'd be great to get rid of them entirely.
But they're not the BCCs and SCCs are not on the same level as things like breast cancer, you know, things that you really, really need to worry about.
Right.
And that is, you know, within the the academy, the experts have for many decades had this discussion about melanoma, where they've wondered how much it is connected to regular sun exposure, because it turns up on places in the body that don't get the most sun exposure.
