Really important question, because basically the recommendations were, understandably, written for people with the fairest skin on the planet, maybe as they should be.
Those are the people who really do need to worry about melanoma.
And you see that very clearly.
When you look at the results, the most important factor for predicting future melanoma diagnoses is not how much sun you got.
It's what color is your skin and how often have you sunburned.
And your hair, too.
Yeah, interesting.
Redheads are super susceptible to melanoma.
That's the absolute number one predictor of future melanoma is a lot of moles because that's where the melanomas start.
And that tends to go also with that super fair skin phenotype.
So those people really do need to take sun exposure very seriously.
So basically what the authorities did is say, all right, we're going to make our public recommendations for that group.
And all the other human beings on Earth can just do the same thing and it won't hurt them at all.
And that, we now know, was a mistake, that if you have darker skin, your risk of getting skin cancer is just a tiny percentage of the people who have very, very fair skin.
But your ability to benefit from these other positive aspects of sunlight
is huge it's even larger so it's clear that we need to have different types of recommendations for people with who with different skin types different genetic backgrounds yeah so we're not saying just ditch the sun cream are we yeah i think sun sun cream is sort of the least of it in a way like i've i've looked there's been a ton of studies about effectiveness of sunscreen and there's a lot been a lot of you know investigations about possible toxic aspects of sunscreen
And it doesn't seem like there's much fire there either way.
Like sun cream is not a magic bullet for preventing skin cancer.
It probably lowers your rate a certain percent.
A lot of studies actually show that it doesn't do that much.
