For past papal funerals, the pontiff was laid inside three nested coffins, one of cypress wood, one of elm and one of lead. They would be covered with a gold cloth and lie in state on a raised pedestal in front of the altar in St Peter's Basilica.
Pope Francis has done away with the more ornate parts of this tradition, just as he advocated for simplicity in life, shunning the wealth and frills that come with a papacy. So he's done so in death. When people stream into St Peter's Basilica, they will find him lying in a simple, single wood coffin lined with zinc. Ruth Sherlock, NPR News, Rome.

There's real emotion and a sense of loss. You know, many were in tears at the rosary prayers last night. But Steve, people are also talking about Francis's legacy, about what he stood for in his 12 years as pope. This is Ruth Angeletti from Montana.

Part of that example was to his own church. Francis famously derided the wealth and the lace and the frills that come with the papacy. He'd wear simpler outfits, he kept his plastic watch, travelled in a small Fiat car, promoting this idea of a less ornate, gold-laden church. And then he was also an advocate for migrants and the environment and seen as being friendlier to the LGBTQ faithful.
He's been accused though of not making substantial enough changes to the church. Here's Ian Kilroy from Ireland.
So even among regular people, you can kind of see the debates taking shape on what his future legacy might be.

His body will be moved to St. Peter's Basilica where people could come to see him from Wednesday. Previous popes were placed in these three nested coffins standing on an elevated bier for the public viewing. But Francis has ordered that he'll be put in a single wooden coffin and it's going to be positioned facing the church pews. His funeral will be Saturday.
Of course, many people will come from all around the world, including President Trump.
Well, it's the largest conclave in history. Pope Francis has appointed 108 of the 135 cardinals who can vote in that conclave. Here's Austin Ivory, Pope Francis's biographer.
So even if Francis chooses cardinals with a similar outlook, experts say, many will still differ and view on some of the huge range of issues, and there's really no guarantee that the conclave will choose a more liberal pope like Francis.

Well, that's right. I mean, the Pope had been struggling with life-threatening double pneumonia. He'd been in hospital on the 14th of February. He was admitted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome for five weeks, which was the longest stay in his 12-year papacy. And at that time, there were prayers for Pope Francis in St. Peter's Square every day.
You know, I interviewed Faithful in tears, believing that this might be the moment, but he made this recovery. And he was brought back to the Vatican, back to his house in the Vatican, and it seemed as though he was recovering. But the Vatican says, made the announcement that he passed away suddenly at 7.35 this morning. The Vatican's Cardinal, Kevin Farrell,
said, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and his church. But as I said, he was starting to make more public appearances in his convalescence. In fact, he made an appearance yesterday at Easter Mass.
Right. Well, first, he actually met with J.D. Vance, the American vice president who was visiting in Italy. And that was a it was not clear if that was going to happen. But he did have that brief meeting. And then he appeared at Easter Mass and he said, Christ, my hope has risen. He had a speech which he wasn't well enough to read out.
