I didn't either.
They had written their own stuff.
They were afraid to play their own music initially.
So those long marathon sessions initially, they're covering other people's music.
And eventually, they got really good at playing together, at getting their reps together, playing other people's music that they would start to sprinkle in their own.
So this is one of the greatest bands of all time started by copying others verbatim.
Okay, imitate, then innovate.
My first job was as a sales rep at LexisNexis sitting in a cubicle.
And my boss, Rex Caswell, what he told me was, okay, here's what we're gonna do.
You're gonna sit with the best reps in the company.
I'm gonna have you sit with them.
You're actually gonna plug in so you can hear what they're saying and what the prospective customer's saying.
And then after you do that for a while, you're gonna go back to your cubicle and you're gonna say the things that they said to your prospective customers.
You're literally gonna copy them verbatim.
And then as you go, you'll get more comfortable and you'll start being able to inject your own personality.
So you're going to imitate, then you're going to innovate.
Eventually, you're going to find your own voice.
So whatever the thing is, like as a quarterback, I would watch film of my favorite players and my ball handling, my footwork, the way I would throw, the way I would read a defense, try to look off a safety, whatever it may be, was literally exactly like the quarterbacks that I looked up to.
