And this is anchored to some other, I think, quite problematic arguments about the essential nature of the
Chinese state and Chinese people, sometimes expressed as the the peaceful genes or peaceful DNA argument, i.e., Chinese people and the Chinese state for various reasons of evolution are not naturally inclined to violence.
Probably goes without saying official historians have to cherry pick the record to to make this case in the Cultural Revolution was a enormous and very, very bloody civil war.

I raise these narratives just to make the point that this was a careful process of, as you say, Henrietta, using and and making the most of of the benefits of the American led order while at the same time having a strategy, which is that this is a time for us to strengthen and that is finite.
I think China's always, always had ambitions to be a great power.
And inevitably the time of openness will end and the ability to to use that order to its advantage will end.
And I think we've certainly reached that point now and and really past sort of seven to ten years, if not more, have been a process of that order gradually giving way and the Chinese strategy gradually pivoting into something new.
I think that that that's a really interesting comment.
I think the Chinese certainly see it in those terms, that that it was a they fought World War Two, you know, for years before World War Two as in typical hit textbooks is said to have started against the Japanese.
Uh and they feel hard done by um by the post war settlement and especially that they weren't involved as an ally um in deciding the allocation of of the Japanese imperial.

I think that's definitely true.
The American perspective is
It's hard to say.
And the the American perspective is also a story in some respects.
It's a narrative about US leadership.
And of course, American makes the case that it's been beneficial, it's been rules-based, it's been in pursuit of of freedom and and democracy.
And elements of that are true, of course, but th there are also, you know, if you talk to people in Guatemala, in Iran, and and other places where
where the US intervened, particularly earlier in that period when the Dulles brothers were in action, it's quite a different story and and it's hard to support completely the narrative that it's been rules-based and that the Americans supported progressive forces around the world because of course, you know, they they really cannot
