Well, this Iran war that we're seeing now is really it's a long term consequence of the intervention in nineteen fifty three in Iran when Mossadegh was was overthrown to secure the interests of the Anglo Iranian oil company.

Yeah, I think what you what you identify as is really important, which is that there are for for all of the regime narratives about China is is is peaceful, the US is in pursuit of freedom, I think great powers are far more similar than they are different.

And power works in quite predictable ways.

And there are really only a finite number of ways that the power in geopolitics can be expressed.

To your episode, Henrietta, on the Chinese role in South America and your interlocutor made the case that Chinese strategy in South America is more or less taking or or going by the playbook of the American strategy in the 50s, which I thought was really enlightening.

And

To be a global power, particularly in in a globalized economy that depends enormously on trade, particularly in the Chinese case, it is not possible to succeed and grow and to protect one's interests without having four-deployed military bases and assets.

This is something that China's started already in Djibouti, in Riam Naval Base in Cambodia.

There are a couple of others that are denied by the party, but identified by some quite credible reporting, including those in Tajikistan and the United Arab Emirates.

My view really is that China will not be able to sustain this rhetorical strategy it has, which is one of non-intervention, which I think we can see that that doesn't stand up to scrutiny, that claim, but it is something that still has

a propaganda benefit and that it that there are long ties with Africa based on this narrative, for example.

And particularly at a time when Trump is intervening very overtly and very explicitly, I think it still is on the margins beneficial to China to portray itself in this way.

But its interests are pulling against that.

I think we'll get into this a little bit more later in the discussion.

But essentially, China is now at a point where its strategy of cooperation and a low profile within the existing US order is not working anymore, and arguably hasn't been working for some time.

And I think the way Beijing has has described its strategy over the last few years illustrates that.

But it looks to me from a study of the documentary record that the Trump president's

policy has been an important infliction point.
