On today's podcast, we're going to take you through what happened this week in Laos and where things stand.
But first, here is a quick message from the birthday boy of TDA, Elliot.
Yeah, and a dramatisation I think as well.
So we're talking about an event that started on the 19th of May in the central Laotian province of Zaisombun, a pretty remote part of the country.
It's about 120 kilometres north of the capital city.
And there was a group of seven villagers who ventured into a cave, and we'll talk about why they went there in a sec.
and got stuck in a major flash flood.
Now this week, five of them have been rescued, but they were in that cave for more than a week.
And until they were actually approached by rescuers, they had no idea that a rescue mission was even taking place.
And as you said, there are some echoes here of a previous mission, and they've tapped into some of the brains behind that mission here today.
Now as to why these villagers were in this cave that was very dangerous to be in in the first place, they were searching for gold deposits.
And there are some reports as well that they were searching for particular animals and wildlife.
No such thing.
It's basically the kind of untreated gold that, you know, doesn't come out of the ground looking as sparkly and beautiful as it does when it gets to retailers and gets made into gold bars.
But it does get kind of dug up in small, sometimes flakes or small chunks and nuggets.
And so they're going to look for that kind of stuff.
And I do think when I was thinking about how to kind of talk through why they were in the cave in the first place, I think it's important to actually talk about the economy because you have to remember that Laos is one of the poorest countries in Southeast Asia.
The local currency has lost more than half its value since 2020.
Inflation peaked at 39%.
