And so you have that situation of a crumbling economy and at the same time gold prices, which we've talked about on this podcast before, have absolutely skyrocketed as this kind of pillar of the economy that people know will be increasing in value no matter what's happening in the world.
And so even a small find in these regional areas can be weeks if not months of growth
wages and of the ability to support families and so there has been an increase in people venturing to really dangerous parts of the rural landscape looking for these really small gold deposits and this was a cave the one that they went into that was known to have a lot of gold in it
It's always a search from what I kind of researched and read about the way that these villages and particularly the young men in the villages go and look for gold.
It's always a bit of luck.
But it's definitely a matter, I think, of going to places that aren't established mines.
And it's more about kind of looking for things in places that no one's ever been to before.
Now, in most cases, these would have been very safe parts of the country to go to, or not very safe, but at least not life-threatening.
The problem that these seven villages encountered here was heavy rain and flash flooding, which caused landslides.
and completely changes the dynamics of the cave.
The entrance was blocked with gravel and dirt.
And these seven villagers were trapped about 300 meters from the exit.
It's not that far.
It's very far when it's 300 metres of gravel.
And parts of the cave system are only about 50 centimetres wide.
So you're talking there about kind of as wide as, say, like a kitchen bench.
And so to get to the depths of the cave that the men were looking for gold, they would have had to slide through some very, very small gaps.
And then when you have landslide and other things filling those gaps, it can be a really dangerous situation.
It's not a tunnel.
