Where people get confused, though, is they think that I would communicate with the King to seek advice and counsel on how I do my job or that he might ring and give me suggestions.

That would never happen.

It didn't ever happen with the Queen.

It certainly has never happened and would happen with the King, just as he doesn't interfere in the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

These are particular relationships that bring a sense of history and stability, but they're not...

They're not there to instruct me or for me to seek guidance on the things I do that I must take instruction from the Australian government and parliament.

And I think people confuse that and think that there is somehow a force that can interfere.

That is not the case with our democracy.

The King did some of his education in Victoria as a schoolboy, so he remains very invested in this country.

He contacts me in moments where he thinks it would be important to send a message to

So certainly around the Bondi tragedy, he did call me.

We had a call where he asked me to pass on his condolences.

He asked me to read a letter, a number of the commemorations, and he sent good wishes to the police officers who were injured in that event.

And I'll be seeing him shortly at the Commonwealth Games.

I'll be there for a short visit for the opening of the Commonwealth Games.

And for him, the Commonwealth is a primary role, which we are a member.

So his attendance at the Commonwealth Heads of Government meetings, most recently in Samoa in 24,

That's where he sees his primary role is what is the role of the Commonwealth in this changing world?

And we care about that too as Australians.

But that's where the relationship sits.
