Buckley said, when people would push back, they'd say, well, are you a conservative or are you a Catholic?
He'd say, Catholic first, conservative second.
Of course, he didn't see any difference between the two.
And, you know, that's where the conflicts would come when, you know, if he thought, sometimes he thought that Vatican was too left wing, you know, he'd say so.
But that had nothing to do with the core of his faith, you know.
He opposed the first Iraq invasion, the first war.
He said America had no interest there.
And it was being fought for oil because what he called the Jewish lobby, the Israel lobby, which was an outrageous term back then, maybe not so much now.
There was a pro-Israel group that was pushing very hard for it.
The neocons who emerged in both Bush administrations were very much involved in that.
And Pappy Cannon said he didn't see why.
He didn't see why we need to fight a war there.
And so they turned on him.
