They'd moved out of their family home and they were building a new one.
And so they were paying rent and a mortgage.
And for their little boy, it was all a lot.
Eva works with kids and families and teachers through a type of treatment program called parent-child interaction therapy, which we'll talk about in more detail soon.
But for now...
You just need to know that her team works on behavioral issues in young kids, up to around the ages of seven or eight.
And to paint you a bit of a picture of what these behaviors can look like, Eva says it's often stuff like tantrums.
There can be a lot of different drivers for this kind of behavior, but Eva says many of the children that she works with meet the criteria for ODD, oppositional defiant disorder.
And so does their behavior look like the chronic not listening or is it like more getting into fights?
So, as Eva mentioned, challenging behaviors in schools have become more common, more frequent.
The question is, why?
The pandemic and the associated increase in screen time for a lot of kids, the break in routine, the hit to mental health during that time, all of those issues have definitely played a role.
But she says that changes in parenting styles have also contributed.
Yeah, can you tell me a bit more about that?
Because, yeah, I think we hear a lot about how the pandemic had an impact, how screens are having an impact.
I'm curious to know what the other cultural, social factors are that you think might be contributing to this problem of problem behavior in schools.
And a 2024 Senate inquiry found that Australian schools are ranked among the worst in the world for managing behavioral issues in the classroom.
Why are we so particularly bad here?
