And among those, about 80 to 90 are fished commercially.
And yes, the commercial species are not doing so well, unfortunately.
The intense fisheries are depleting populations and they're not easy to come back from that exploitation.
Hopefully, we can find solutions for the exploited species because that's definitely a concern.
They're extremely important.
Ecologically speaking,
Different types of sea cucumbers actually can rework the sediment.
So some of them are what we call deposit feeders, and they will actually sift the organic matter.
And in doing so, they do something very similar to earthworms.
So they kind of rework the sediment and they oxygenate.

And there's also studies that have shown that the presence of sea cucumber is helpful in kind of managing the microbial communities.
And so they discovered that if they remove the sea cucumbers, let's say from some coral reefs,
then the corals have more disease.
Well, it was a pleasure and hopefully it makes everyone aware of them and keen to protect them because they do need our protection to continue to have a beneficial role in the ocean.
