So the biggest thing is to remember that acute pain, so sudden pain, is very different to long-lasting pain.
So things like standing on a dog's foot will get a very different reaction to something like osteoarthritis that takes a long time to build up.
Because with long-term pain, your pet almost becomes accustomed to it.
So you don't get that yelp and holding up a foot moment.
And with things like osteoarthritis or dental disease, where it's a long-term pain source...
So generally the signs can be, like I said, they can be subtle.
They can be that your pet becomes slightly more withdrawn.
They'll still want to go on their walk and they'll still eat because that's what our pets do.
But you may notice some behaviour changes.
They might become more likely to sit away from you in the evenings or they might become a little bit head shy if it's their mouth.
You know, they might prefer rubs on their back than on their head where previously they would have preferred both equally.
They might be a little bit stiff when they first stand up.
They could be a bit slower to get going.
It might be a case that they over-groom or under-groom.
So with dogs, we notice... Licking the affected area.
Yes.
Dogs often will lick.
So you'll see them licking their feet or their joints if there's a little bit of pain there.
Cats can tend to not groom at all.
And you'll notice even short-coated cats can become matted, which is always a sign that something is off.
