When I started, you know, there were eight
big airlines or a bunch of smaller carriers.
If you looked at the list of major airlines, 13, 14 airlines at different times.
Now, essentially, you have four giant airlines, maybe three or four others that you'd call medium-sized.
That has changed things, particularly with the giant airlines, four airlines that now control about 80% of U.S.
travel.
Well, I do think that the end of change fees in a lot of cases, that's a big win for passengers.
Change fees, cancellation penalties, they're just plain unfair.
Airlines were overbooking flights to protect themselves in case somebody didn't show up.
And then if you didn't show up, they were charging you for the seat as well.
They were charging you penalties for changing your plan.
So they get paid twice for the same seat.
Pick one and protect yourself that way.
But
Airlines are, I can't think of another business that penalizes customers to the extent that airlines do.
And that really aggravates customers.
So eliminating that I do think is a big win.
I also think, you know, this is a little bit tougher to get your head around, but I think the passenger acceptance of low fare airlines has really promoted a lot of competition.
So even Southwest, particularly in its earlier days, JetBlue, Spirit, Frontier, the fact that people were willing to just go get on those airlines and in some cases even give up their loyalty points and things like that, it really made the business more competitive.
It forced other airlines, bigger airlines, to address that.
