We saw the same thing in Europe with EasyJet and Ryanair.

Because people were willing to fly those airlines, they forced all airlines to change.

You know, I'd like to think that the column raised reliability as a competitive issue.

We started ranking airlines on their operational performance 14 years ago.

And I can tell you, airlines really paid attention.

They had data analysts tracking exactly what we were tracking and see how they were doing.

Each year, they were checking the data behind me.

I'd hear from United and Alaska and other airlines during the year, how are you going to count this?

How are you going to count that?

So they were paying attention.

And I think it really pressured airlines into improvement.

And that's good for travelers.

We also started ranking frequent flyer award availability.

Nobody had ever measured that before.

And I think that had an impact at several carriers where they were embarrassed at how hard it was to get awards.

And they had to make changes.

And then the one...

One of the things I'm most proud of, JR, is I railed about the lousy coffee on Southwest Airlines.

And they finally did improve the coffee, and the company actually wrote me a letter and said, okay, you win.
