You know, if I never did anything else but be the TV announcer for the Red Sox, that was a tremendous honor.
There wouldn't have been anything that would have been better than that.
Well, it's funny because as you mentioned each of those examples, I'm thinking, yep, I had one of those.
Yes, I had one of those.
So I could probably pick all of the above and give you an anecdote, and I've already been way more long-winded than I should have, so I'm not going to do that.
I do think the Welcome to the Big League moment was opening day in 1988 when I walked into the booth.
It was a lot different than it is now.
It was before they renovated Fenway Park, and it was kind of this metal box that was right at the top of the screens.
And I remember walking down there, and I had been in there a bunch of times because when I was doing the Red Sox pregame and postgame, I'd stick my head in and say hi to Ned Martin and Bob Montgomery, the announcer.
But I remember kind of sitting in the seat, filling in my lap card, and just looking around, all the bunting from opening day and the other pomp and circumstances and getting chills thinking,
I really am here.
What I dreamed about doing when I sat in the Red Sox radio booth in Winter Haven, Florida 20 years ago is now what I'm doing.
My dream has come true.
And then you get the Welcome to the Big Leagues moment.
They lose on a home run by Alan Trammell.
off Lee Smith, I believe.
And the next day I was in the post office and a guy said to me, are you the McDonough guy who did the Red Sox games?
I said, yes.
He said, you did a good job, but can I give you some advice?
And I said, sure.
