So...

I had heard about the Syracuse University football games to run a tape-delayed package that was produced by the local PBS station, WCNY.

And I was involved in helping out on that a little bit.

But I knew the people who were involved in it.

And so I found out through them.

the PBS stations basically of the Northeast, some other stations, but the public TV stations were starting this Ivy league football game of the week package, which would air on PBS.

So, um,

I thought, I'll throw in my name, my tape, whatever, to try to be the sideline report.

I had a feeling they probably weren't going to hire a 22-year-old play-by-play person.

So got to know who the contact people were.

And lucky for me, the originator of the package, a gentleman named Greg Harney, was from Boston.

WGBH, I think TV Channel 2 here in Boston is a PBS station.

And then the other bit of good fortune was that our athletic director at Syracuse, Jake Krauthammel, had been the football coach at Dartmouth and had come to Syracuse from Dartmouth.

And he knew all the people in the Ivy League, you know, all the athletic directors.

So I was talking to our football coach, Dick McPherson, for whom I was an intern, and mentioning, oh, I'm looking at this opportunity.

He said, you should go in and see Jake.

Jake knows everybody in the Ivy League.

And I thought, I'm not sure Jake knows me.

Jake, you know, I'm a little intern here on the bottom of the totem pole.

He said, oh, Jake knows who you are.
