So, you know, Patrick and John used to grab their friend's computers, install Stripe and be like, now you can accept payments.
And it turns out that actually being able to accept payments and manage money is a really important part of how a company grows.
It was very hard at the time, if you were a startup with zero revenue and zero funding, to get any bank to agree to enable you to process credit cards.
Okay, that was the secret sauce.
So it was a huge thing for them.
So that was the technical breakthrough you talk about.
Correct, yes.
That was the bit you went from complex to simple.
Correct.
And this is the whole thing about Stripe is that the world of finance is complicated, really complicated, and generally not available in the same way to startup founders as it is to large institutions and large companies.
And so Stripe just made it dead simple, like extremely simple, just remove the complexity, increase the speed at which startups could move.
And when I was there, they had this cohort chart, right?
And a cohort is basically like, for all the customers we signed up in 2012, how much money are they generating in 2023?
And they would show every year's cohort and like how big they'd become.
And obviously, most recent customers are like kind of smaller in terms of their growth than the early ones.
But like Patrick and John signed up a cohort from this Y Combinator class.
And in the first two years, they were all of these startups.
