And that's why I think my solution is better in that if we only make the employer contribution compulsory, it means that at least employees are not having to kind of chip in that extra money from day one.
So it makes it much easier for the progression to happen in a smoother way.
But there is no way to get around compulsion.
Yeah, total rem contracts are actually not in keeping with the spirit of KiwiSaver.
They should be banned pretty much in my view.
In reality, though, it's always the worker that bears the cost of KiwiSaver.
So in reality, what happens is for an employer, when they hire you, what they see is the total cost of hiring you.
And when you have KiwiSaver, some of the money goes into KiwiSaver account and the rest goes to your bank account.
That's the only difference to the business.
There is no difference to the business if the total rent contracts don't exist.
So in my mind, it's actually neither here nor there for the business.
It's not a business issue.
All the international literature shows that the incidence or the cost of pension schemes or pension contributions is borne by the worker.
And I think there is broad agreement within the political spectrum that the total REM contracts are a problem.
It's not a huge and widespread practice.
So I don't think it's going to create a huge disruption if we just got rid of it.
And as we have seen with the last few governments, legislation can be done very quickly when they want to.

I mean, already in the last 18 years, we've gone from zero to $145 billion.
In the next 50 years, it's going to be over a trillion dollars.
