So if you look at the recent proposals for baby KiwiSaver, so to getting kids into KiwiSaver from birth, it then becomes something that might be a resource for your education when you turn an adult, right?
It could become that thing that helps you for your first home.
It could be your retirement funds.
It can become something different to what it was when it first started.
And that's absolutely okay.
Do I have a problem with it becoming that?
No.
But if you want it to be really good for all of those kinds of things, we do need to save more than the 12% because the 12% is only enough for retirement.
So my recommendation to people is go to Sorted or one of those trusted websites and work backwards to what you want in terms of the quality of life that you want.
For most people, especially if you're kind of above the average income,
you should be saving more.
You also have the capability to save more.
And that saving doesn't have to be in KiwiSaver.
It could be an investment fund.
It can be in something else.
But that regular habit of saving is really important.
And for a lot of people, if you want that good quality of life in retirement, you probably do need to save more than your minimum if you're above the average earner.
Well, I think that's exactly what happened with KiwiSaver.
So KiwiSaver was really kind of inspired by what happens in Australia and the compulsory scheme that we had had for a very short duration.
And the idea is we try and get people into the scheme.
