We save gradually.
And over a period of time, a big chunk of us will have enough financial resources to retire independently.
Not everyone, but a big chunk of us, right?
About 40% in Australia.
Australia does things a bit differently.
There's a lot more incentives, subsidies, lower tax rates.
So their system is much better than ours.
But I don't think we can completely emulate them because we've left it too late.
We just don't have enough buffer in our fiscal system, in our tax revenue, to be able to afford all that stuff.
So unfortunately, we're going to have to get a B-grade kind of savings scheme rather than an A-grade savings scheme that they have.
But it's probably going to be good enough within the context of what we have in New Zealand.
I do.
Part of the issue for me is...
We just haven't really committed.
So when KiwiSaver started, it had a pretty clear plan of how it would get bigger and better over time.
But for pretty much in the successive periods, we've seen it essentially being weakened by multiple governments, particularly the national government, because they hated it at the time.
But the recent move has been really fascinating to see the national party really lead with, I think, quite courageous changes to KiwiSaver.
So all applause to them for that.
It doesn't have to be perfect.
It's the direction of travel that matters.
