The thing that worries me is we still haven't kind of really committed to KiwiSaver being the option for us to have a better retirement system into the future because that's what it is.
It's an option because if we have a KiwiSaver that's big enough and strong enough, if enough people start to save enough money, then we can make those difficult trade-offs in terms of do we do means testing?
How do we introduce it?
Who doesn't get it?
How do we make sure we do it in a way that's not socially destructive?
Because that's what we want, right?
We want to look after as many New Zealanders as well as possible.
No, we haven't.
And again, I think that is a big conversation we have to have.
For me, it's really about saying how much wealth would you count as enough to be able to live comfortably?
Because we can't set a means testing regime that really kind of penalizes people for having worked all their lives and saved and then go, now, you know, welcome to a bad retirement.
We can't do that.
So it has to be people who genuinely have enough money.
So I think, again, looking at an Australian type model will give us some pointers that
But I don't think we're ready for that yet.
I think we need to first get KiwiSaver right before we transition into thinking about how much is enough for that quality of life in retirement.
For me, commitment would be compulsion.
And it sounds really rough, right?
It sounds very draconian.
But the reason why I'd like compulsion is because once it's in and once it's embedded, it becomes very difficult for future political parties to mess with it.
