Yeah, what they all said across the board is that you should manage expectations up front.
In the past, it used to be that if you invited someone to do something, the understanding was that you were going to pay for everything.
That is not the case now.
Really, what you should do, though, is say at the start of a dinner, like, hey, we're going to split this evenly or, hey, who wants to pay for this?
I'll Venmo you back or whatever it is that works for you and your friend dynamics.
But it's really important to sort of have those conversations.
etiquette experts I talked to said it's totally fine to just say, hey, guys, I only had water and a salad.
Do you mind if I pay a little bit less?
Or, you know, on the opposite side, if you had a more expensive main course or you had a couple extra drinks,
You can say, hey, I know I consumed more.
Do you guys mind if I pay for the tip or I can buy drinks after dinner?
Whatever it is.
So then it still is making things even, but not necessarily causing any awkwardness beyond having to bring it up at all.
Travel is kind of a different beast.
If you're going out for dinner, it could be just Venmo me for your portion or, oh, we're going to split this three ways.
Everybody throw in their card.
With travel, you have a lot of shared expenses, but you may also be buying things.
There may be things that you're doing that your friends aren't, or you're splitting hotels every night, whatever it is.
In the past, my friends and I would have these detailed spreadsheets where we'd be keeping track of all of our expenses in advance, who was paying what.
Or we'd be trying to do calculations like, okay, you paid $25 for hot dogs for us yesterday.
