They identified a that one of the anti HIV drugs, one specific drug actually, not a whole class of drugs.
particularly dru a particular drug trade named Calitra or Lopinivir had activity um in vitro.
So when you're trying to grow the virus in the lab, the drug inhibited growth.
And they tested it in a non randomized clinical trial which has always got problems, but it looked like people did a bit better than when they didn't have that
Um drug, but it was not randomized.
And since that time, a lot more work's been done with MERS, and it looks like Lopinovira collitra also is activity in vitro, at least for MERS, and some activity in vivo.
But there are other antivirals that probably look a little bit more promising than the HIV drugs, and one of those is REMdesivir, which was developed by Gilead and blocks the replication of RNA viruses.
like Ebola, MERS, SARS, and potentially N coronavirus.
And so there's clinical trials currently happening with these agents.

It's had um obviously a great effect on our delegates.
I think it's had a great effect on the world really, with the loss of senseless loss of life.
Uh
for many countries, including Australia and obviously Victoria and and of course the conference with six delegates that were on their way uh to AIDS twenty fourteen.
Well the delegates were uh included key researchers, um b uh clinical researchers and and community advocates uh who were um you know passionate about their work.
One of them I knew well, uh that's Joep uh Lange, who's a Dutch researcher and his partner Jacqueline.
And uh was a previous president of the International Aid Society, had a
huge impact on many aspects of our response, including particularly getting anti HIV drugs into low income countries.
