So if we want to know that someone um

We have on the spot tests to work out whether you're carrying the virus, whether you're HIV positive or not.

They've actually just been lic they're just their licensing arrangements have just changed in Australia around that point um so that of in the future we will ha be able to have home testing and their on the spot HIV tests, are you positive or not?

And then we use a measure we we measure the immune function by measuring a particular cell in the immune system called a C D four T cell.

So we measure someone's C D four cell count.

That tells us how damaged their immune system is, whether they need treatment and how they're responding to treatment.

So the Burnett or Suzanne Crow and David Anderson at the Burnett have invented a very cool on the spot C D D four test.

Very cheap, bit like a pregnancy test.

Basically you get a stripe d on on um on the uh test with a drop you put a drop of blood on the test and you can work out whether you're above or below a particular C D four count.

And when the child stopped antiretroviral medicines, usually the virus didn't come back.

Now usually when you stop anti HIV drugs the virus comes back in about one to four weeks.
