In this baby the virus didn't come back.
Traces of the virus could be measured, but it was effectively cleared.
And there was great hope that the baby had indeed been cured.
Well that's at eighteen at that's eight uh six months after exactly at six months after stopping there was nothing.
Baby was under close observation and then two weeks ago was reported that at twenty seven months after stopping, so just over two years the virus suddenly reappeared.
So that what did we learn from the Mississippi baby?
That the child was in remission, which is might be a better word to use than cured.
And that's what I think is we're now beginning to think is more achievable, to put the virus into remission, achieve a state where someone can safely stop their drugs and the virus stays under control.
bit like ca I think we're learning that to really wipe out every single infected cell and not find a trace of virus anywhere is gonna be very difficult.

Um, he is he he he's been in remission for six years and the doctors when you actually look and hunt in tissue and in blood and the various places where vi the virus hides, you can't find the virus anywhere.
That's right.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's early days in that technique.
Um there's only been a few studies.
Um one that was uh done a couple of years ago here in Melbourne by um my group and another group in the US showed that this is feasible.
You used we used a s a particular kind of cancer drug and showed that you could wake up the virus.
In other wi in other words, you could give it a kick but the cell didn't die.
