There's this mindset where people believe that more skilled riders can use harsher bits and basically cancel out the effects of them and that you're more skilled if you can use a harsh bit.
When personally now, like I believe the opposite to be true because the more skilled riders shouldn't need the threat of a harsh bit in the first place.

I I that actually goes into my next question well with what you were saying about the room that h horses have in their mouths.
How do double bridles come into play with that?
Yeah, I think that that's probably why we see so many oral behaviors while they're in the arena too.
If they don't have the space in their mouth, it's no wonder why there's so much opening of the mouth and like trying to r alleviate pressure on the bit.
Um, 'cause it it's something that I've wondered about for a while, but it as you said, it's very controversial because it's just so deeply normalized and there's this idea that they're needed for refinement of AIDS and that you can give lighter, more direct cues.
But the interesting thing that I have found is um
When you're watching a lot of these riders at the top levels of dressage, they have quite a bit of a hold on the horse's mouths, and they're pretty heavy in the bridle.
I got the opportunity to ride a Grand Prix dressage horse several years ago when I was working for a trainer that had one, and I was
really blown away by how heavy in the bridle he was.
It was like riding a freight train.
The closest comparative I have d is to when I galloped racehorses 'cause they teach them to run into the bridle and really lean on you and pull.
And I found that really interesting because of how
dressage is marketed to be about lightness, softness, harmony.
And it felt very odd to me, but it was something where at the time, like, I and even now, like, I wouldn't be viewed as a voice of authority in any sense because I don't compete dressage and there's a lot of normal traditions.
But that's really interesting 'cause I've wondered that for a while about fitting them into the mouse.
