Well, I was wondering, there was a model of a plane on the table in front of Trump.
It looked like a 747, and I wasn't sure if that was the new Boeing that he has apparently ordered or this Qatar plane that's been agreed today.
Yes, I do.
There was a lovely moment just after that question where
President Ramaphosa said, if I had a plane, I'd give it to you.
Here it is.
You know, Don, I'm a journalist.
I've worked in South Africa and across the African continent for all my career.
And I've worked in a lot of countries where
Leaders are authoritarian, where the press is restricted, where it's incredibly difficult for journalists to work.
And certainly you see some worrying signs in Trump of heading down that direction.
But I have to say, you're still a free and fair, you know, you've got a lot of press freedoms.
And there's still a huge role that journalists can play in making sure that we all know what's going on and that stuff is reported fairly and accurately.
And I think the South African issue is a great place to start where we are seeing so much nonsense regurgitated by American outlets, even ones that aren't particularly sympathetic to Trump, but are not doing the checks and not doing the original reporting to debunk it effectively.
No, that would be very out of character for President Ramaphosa.
Nonetheless, South Africa has...
some of the best press freedom laws in the world.
So it's a pretty good place to be a journalist and to practice this profession.
And I think that as America confronts this new sort of reality that journalism is living under in your country, but also that the country itself is going through, I think you have a lot of lessons that you can learn from other parts of the world
um countries in africa being a great example where we have been dealing with some of these issues for a lot longer than you and have developed our own sort of solutions and strategies to keep information coming out um and informing audiences in in conditions that are much much more restrictive than anything you guys are dealing with yeah any final words uh i'm wondering how the folks are going to accept it if they're going to pay attention to this because it is your president i imagine it's going to be on the news
