But there's lots of people who don't qualify for anything.

And they just want the government sometimes to get out of their way and let them keep some of their own money.

You're trying to do the budget here today, which is good, but it's 77 days to go.

Well, we are honest with people.

I mean, we did have an election and, you know, in terms of how the people felt, I mean, the people did return my party to government and told us to get on with the job of delivering for them in a number of key areas.

And what I'm saying is we shouldn't look at any one issue in isolation because you're right, quite frankly, we can and we will do something on personal income tax.

I think we can and we'll do a decent amount on personal income tax over the next four budgets, all things being equal.

But that alone isn't what, let's call the middle Ireland for the purpose of this conversation, isn't going to move the dial.

Pardon the pun.

What will move the dial actually is that, plus a move on childcare, plus helping people make sure their savings are beginning to work, plus looking at things like structural energy costs.

So it's not any one thing.

It's we've got to take a Middle Ireland lens, if you like, that squeeze middle lens to a range of areas.

Some is on the spending side, like childcare is too high.

It's a second mortgage for many people.

Some is on the tax side.

You're paying the higher rate of tax at too low an entry point.

So it's not any one thing.

But over the course of four budgets, which I intend to be centrally involved in, you will be able to genuinely make progress for those people.

And that's progress not just for individuals.

It's in our actual national interest to do this too.
