There has to be a wake-up call here.
One to two children every single day?
Well, look, I mean, you're the parent of the child, aren't you?
So, I mean, let's work our way through all of these things in the legislation.
Let's have the debate in the Oireachtas.
But at the end of the day, there is laws of the land and then there's also parental responsibility that we all bear in relation to our own children.
That would be correct.
And we're going to address all three of them.
But the first thing I want to say to the GOA, because I heard their comments and I think they're fair.
It's too easy for Dáil Éireann to pass a new law and not have to enforce the law.
It's the men and women of An Garda Síocháin who have to put on the uniform and go out and do the job.
And we have a duty to their safety as well in terms of pursuit too.
So we do have an obligation to the safety of the men and women of the Gardaí as well.
So the first thing I'd say to the GOA respectfully is we're kind of moving the burden here away from just you trying to catch somebody who's breaking the law to actually putting a responsibility on the retailer at the point of sale.
I think that's very helpful in terms of reducing the scale of the challenge.
Secondly, we did decide yesterday that issues around how you protect the Gardaí will be dealt with in terms of the legislation around indemnifying.
The idea that any member of a Garda Síochána who's going about their duties
would find themselves having to wonder at the back of their mind, can I do this or am I going to end up in trouble?
That pendulum has swung way too far.
We intend to address that too.
