We can't know for sure what Columbus truly believed, but publicly at least, and in spite of da Gama's discovery, Columbus continued to claim that he had reached the periphery of Asia.
In 1502, Columbus set off on his fourth and final voyage.
Once again, it was funded by the Spanish crown, and the objective was to find a westward maritime route to Asia.
Columbus expressed hopes that this voyage would turn out to be his noblest.
However, once again, there were many disappointments.
It goes without saying that Columbus didn't find the route he was looking for.
In addition, his return to what we now know as the Caribbean was not exactly welcomed.
When Columbus tried to enter Hispaniola, the new governor, Nicolás de Ovando, refused to allow him to enter.
Columbus was forced to sail on.
Together with his crew, he explored the coasts of Jamaica, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama.
But in June of 1503, after months of storms and damage to his ships, Columbus became stranded in Jamaica.
His requests for help were ignored.
The governor of Hispaniola was apparently in no hurry to rescue him.
In the meantime, Columbus needed to win over the people of Jamaica in order to survive.
He did so by accurately predicting a lunar eclipse in February of 1504 using astronomical charts.
The event was so impressive, or so frightening, that the local people continued to provide food for Columbus's crew.
A few months later, rescue ships finally arrived.
Columbus began a long journey back to Spain, arriving in November 1504.
we can imagine that Columbus must have been relieved to be back at last.
However, it wasn't the happiest of homecomings.
