Indeed, after Columbus's death, his eldest son Diego continued lengthy legal battles on the family's behalf.
Columbus died in Spain in May 1506 at the age of 54.

So, in less than 15 years, Columbus made four epic voyages, laying the foundations for a long and complicated relationship between Europe and the Americas.

In the early 16th century, Columbus was famous, but not widely viewed as a hero.
Many believed that he had failed as a governor, to put it mildly.
Still, there was no denying that Columbus's voyages had changed history.
They represented the beginning of permanent contact between two parts of the world,
for good and bad.
While Columbus was later given credit for discovering the Americas, the continent was named after another explorer, Amerigo Vespucci.
Vespucci was exploring the Americas at around the same time as Columbus.
he was one of the first to realize that they were a new world rather than part of Asia.
This raises an interesting question.
