So I think that, I talk about this a bit in the book, that I think there's this idea of what is a community?
And I think it's almost like a binary thing in the way that it's written about.
You are a member of this community or that, and it's one or the other.
I think we're collectively a member of a ton of online communities without knowing.
necessarily so one end is going to be dumb things like the community people who don't know how to boil an egg or for me i can i'm quite good at getting hold of marmite in san francisco which for for americans is something you either hate or love but i love it and i can get it in san francisco so it's a weird weird little thing i'm part of but our lives are not
the same at all there's i talk about my family history and how it's unique to me but the individual parts of it are not necessarily unique to me there's something that's reflected globally but i just happen to be this one collection of these factors and these variables in one particular way so my feeling is that a lot of this data shows that that we're part of this very disparate band of
communities and populations without really necessarily knowing it.
That thing you mentioned before, like alone together, is a really good way to phrase that.
It's very much something that's just part of who we are now.
And seeing it reflected in that way through the data is something I can't see another way you would be able to learn that about us as humans.
Yeah, you definitely see it in a lot of New York Times.
People like that will often use Google Trends to see if a piece of misinformation is spreading.
Because what happens is when there's a story out there, people want to search for, is this true?
Actually, for me, it's reassuring that people want to test whether this thing they've heard is true and they want to know the facts behind it.
So you definitely see that in the data.
A lot of people use it in that way.
I mean, yeah, we don't have all that numbers of people or anything in the data.
Yeah.
But we do see, like, when you see something trending, it has to be searched by a reasonable number of people for that to be the case, for sure.
I mean, so this is really interesting.
