So Hal Varian, who was Google's chief economist, wrote a paper about this.

Yeah, about now casting, which is kind of an economic term for like using current data to predict the future.

And his take was that Google Trends is definitely a leading indicator.

So people will search for things like jobless benefits before they start showing up in official statistics.

Or people search for vacations in Italy before Tuscany gets busy.

You know, you don't like search for buying a house and then buy the one the next day.

It's like a research process that you do over months.

So definitely there is something interesting about the data there.

But we're just at the beginning of this.

We've only had real-time Google data since 2015, which is when I joined Google.

And we don't necessarily know what does it mean.

It's a new thing.

It's not nothing.

I think it's definitely a social signal.

In a way, sometimes I feel like this kind of archaeologist in real time.

You're kind of coming across something and then exploring it and opening it up to the world without ever having seen it before.
