This is a really excellent question because when it comes to memoir, I do believe there is a contract between the writer and the reader that everything the person is reading is...
the writer's truth-telling to the utmost degree that's possible.
We were talking earlier about how each of us has perspectives and their cultural perspectives, but also personal perspectives that shape how we understand the world.
That is simply present in all writing.
But in this memoir, I do not invent long dialogues, for example.
It's only what I can absolutely remember.
Paul saying to me, I want to be a ghost.
You don't forget that.
You know, little what I call brain tattoos, sentences and fragments of sentences that you can carry throughout your whole life.
But no, I don't take any liberties in nonfiction.
Right.
In fiction, yes.
Well, in fiction, the reader knows that he, she, or they is reading an invented story, and then one has free range entirely.
Well, it's interesting because when I wrote What I Loved, my father was actually still alive.
And I had lost grandparents, but no tremendous loss, certainly not of a child.
And yet there were people that wrote me letters and at some readings who came up to me and said that they had a child who died and then said, and it was just like that now.
Of course, it couldn't have been just like that because it's a specific story about particular people.
But I think what they meant was that it echoed their own experience of terrible, terrible loss.
And then I would always say, oh, I'm really sorry.
