It's a bidirectional kind of thing.
Having said that, if you really don't love yourself, if you love self-esteem, you're not going to believe other people's expressions of love.

If you don't love yourself, you literally are going to be, quote, less lovable, right?
It leaks out, right, that your self-image is poor and you're not going to be as likely to receive love.
So I think that's another barrier.

That is the one thing I don't know.
I'm an interventionist.
I'm an experimental social psychologist.
I don't know of any good interventions to increase people's self-esteem.
Well, interventions in the lab, you know, that have been actually like evidence-based.
But remember, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, right?
So just because there aren't interventions doesn't mean that they wouldn't work.
I mean, I could speculate, you know, like based on years of experience and, you know, expertise that, you know, like, for example, just pursuing goals, passions that are important to you, you know, and having successes in those things and practicing your social skills, like that's going to build your self-esteem.
I just don't know any, maybe they're out there, but I don't know any successful interventions that have actually boosted people's self-esteem.

some really solid theories in psychology about how self-esteem is kind of a measure, like a metric, a meter of what's happening.
