And I think when we have something tugging at us, whether it's kind of an unmet value or an emotion that we're kind of ignoring and suppressing, I think it can keep pulling harder and harder and sort of like staring at it face on and really accepting that this is something that matters or this is an emotion that you're feeling, like may actually help reduce the pull of it once it's really acknowledged.
Yeah, so first there were a lot of kind of the usual suspects of what people said helped.
If we look at people who said they tried a thing and then say what percentage of those wrote about it when we say what was the most helpful, we find that at the top of the list are therapy, medication, talking to friends and family about the issues.
And then those really stood out as like among those that tried them, they said they were more likely to say that they were really helpful.
But I actually think a lot of like the most instructive stuff was around when we asked the question, what would you advise to someone who's very similar to you who's getting into this field in terms of dealing with these psychological challenges?
And there, I think it surfaced some interesting recommendations.
So many people talked about sustainability and how focusing on sustainability is really important.
Even if you don't think it matters for its own sake, it's really important just to be effective.
And people that are very focused on sacrifice rather than sustainability, they often aren't even able to achieve the thing they want.
In other words, the sacrifice doesn't work over the long term, leads to boom and bust cycles, or they burn out and they end up having to leave or change their work.
In my experience, being totally adherent to a philosophy can actually increase people's self-deception around this.
If you think that everything has to be justified in terms of maximizing utility, then now, given your nature as a human being, you have tremendous psychological pressure to justify everything that is for something else you care about in terms of maximizing utility.
And I think that's actually a very unhealthy and self-deluded state to be in.
But if you accept, oh, wait, I'm a human.
I have multiple values.
And here's what I actually value.
Then you can talk about, OK, well, actually, I'm doing this.
The reason I have my friends is because I value human connection.
It's really important to me.
