In New South Wales there's a hospital that costs three and a half thousand dollars to do a laparosopic colosystectomy, and there's another hospital that costs almost eight thousand dollars. matched

We looked at two expensive hospitals in one state. matched

And what we found there was that in one case neurosurgery was really expensive and in the other cardiology. matched

So just because you're expensive in one area doesn't mean you're expensive in every area. matched

The answer is different things in different hospitals. matched

So in some cases it might be the treatment path, the length of stay, for example. matched

And again we found significant differences in length of stay. matched

The other examples might be costs of supplies, prosthesis costs. matched

There's no one simple answer. matched

And we we argue that hospitals need to have better information about where they stand and where they stand relative to other hospitals in quite some detailed level so they can actually bury down and find matched

out where they need to improve. matched

We're not quite as dramatic as getting them all down to the best practice. matched

The savings of a billion dollars are there, but that's just getting rid of half of the avoidable costs that we identified. matched

So we're saying there might be errors in what we've done in terms of our method and so on. matched

So we're not trying to say everybody has to get down to the absolute perfect. matched

What we're saying is getting down to a reasonable level can still save you a billion dollars. matched

So what would they have to do to do that? matched

Well, we say the states have to tighten up on the way they price at the moment when they set their prices for their activity based funding arrangements, the f the way they fund public hospitals. matched
