My contention is that if we were to zoom out and ask ourselves, do the costs to human communities and ecosystems justify the benefits that we get from gold mining?
I think most people would say no.
The amount of damage that is done to the planet, I think, is plainly unjustifiable.
And the sooner we get to that conclusion, the better.
I think it feels like a long ways off.
And I think these things always feel like a long ways off until suddenly they are upon us.
And a happy story that I like to point to is how some of the world's largest mining companies several years ago divested their entire coal assets.
They said, we're going to get out of this business.
It's not justifiable anymore.
And we would reach the same conclusion about ivory or whale blubber.
And I think gold is probably next on the list.
Yes, it's understandable, right?
And we have to be sympathetic about it.
If you live in a country where the currency is unstable, people have every reason to want to hold on to gold.
Because they might not feel that they can trust that they can leave their money in a bank and it'll still be there in a week's time.
But these decisions have real trade-offs.
And when we're talking about a mineral that is so scarce in the world that to get one gram of gold, you have to move one million grams of earth to get to it.
It is a one to one million ratio.
We are talking about...
vast costs that we don't ever see.
