Most people in their lives will never visit a gold mine, let alone talk to an artisanal miner who might be suffering from mercury poisoning, for example.
Hmm.
It's true.
And many years ago, I went to Mongolia and did research with these artisanal gold miners in Mongolia.
They're nice people.
You know, for them, it's the equivalent of like driving for Uber.
It's a way to pick up some extra cash to, you know, maybe afford their kids school tuition.
Like you name it.
These are not villains and we shouldn't vilify them.
But the fact that good people are involved in it doesn't justify that industry continuing in the same way that there might be really great people doing wildcat logging in the Amazon.
But we wouldn't go ahead and say, well, just because they need the money for good things, it justifies clear-cutting rainforest.
I think there is.
And we're seeing the first tendrils of that starting to come into the gold industry with jewelers who are really advertising recycled gold as something that they're promoting, that they're proud of.
And my hope is that we're only five or 10 years out from a similar transition.
But it begins with the consumer.
