And though and the and the process, I mean, it was like getting into a really tough college, basically, right?

To get in the United States.

And my own father, by the way, had come here for school.

So it had come on a student visa.

That wasn't very hard in those days.

Uh, but when the student visa ran out, applied for

uh permanent residence.

He didn't get it for whatever reason.

But again, it was really hard in the 1950s.

Pre-1965, we took in very few.

So between sort of that Ellis Island period and 1965, there was almost no immigration to the United States.

Or it was extremely difficult anyway.

And so he was in that period at the latter end of that period.

Uh went back to Columbia, where he's uh born and raised.

And I asked him once by the way, I said, Did you ever think of staying here illegally?

And he said I would never do that.

He said, you know, I I love this country.

wanted to be part of it.

I didn't want to be looking over my shoulder, but also I wouldn't disrespect this land that I wanted to be part of.

He had already met my mother, was already in love.
