There's a really short list of people that are truly essential for continuity of government.
And they go into the no fry zone.
And everyone else, like me, had an amazing badge, had a pin.
You could go anywhere.
You had all these privileges there.
It's walk your bones home and we'll see if we see you.
And that was I think that's the humbling thing that you that really we should all have that very, very few of us are truly essential and are most of us are on the list of replaceable if necessary.
And if you operate that way, you're probably going to be a better person.
But that was that was a huge, huge takeaway.
But the other one was President Bush.
uh the morning of september 12th he stood outside sort of the greasy spoon on the bottom of the eeob i had my 6 a.m intel briefing went down to get my sugar high for the day to try to keep going and the president of the united states was just standing there uh one by one taking as much time as was needed with like a hundred or so just ordinary staff it was a mix of some people who did policy and some people just logistics work in the building
But he prayed with them.
He hugged them, just talked with them.
And I just sort of in that moment, I felt like he was drawing from all of these people and prayers because the weight of this was just way too much for a human being to carry.
And that's just stuck with me no matter what anyone thought about George W. Bush or his policies after that.
And I could pick bones with some of the policies that came after that.
