And the reason why the intelligence community, for the most part, chooses leaders that have a background in intelligence, particularly in that position, is because
It is a unique discipline that is disproportionately dependent on seeing the truth, being ruthless about your presentation, being willing to be inconvenient, and then still participating in the decision-making process.
And that just...
It takes some experience and it takes some courage and it takes some understanding of what the real job is to be able to pull that off day after day.
And so what happens when you put in leaders that don't understand that or don't have that background
or then worse, as we see now, who seem to be driven to please a person rather than serve a nation, I think you're seeing that erosion of the uniqueness and the contribution of the intelligence community.
The women and men are still fighting really hard, but the contribution is all dependent on its ability to be presented, defended, and heard, not in its correctness or incorrectness, but the fact that it is.
It was not my experience that he read much.
And we had some really good briefers.
So remember, when you walk into the Oval Office, your job is to really make sure that what you need to say gets heard.

I think the way we went into the Iran war, the way it's been affected, and what we're seeing is a perfect example of all these things were knowable.

And it's kind of a Hobson's choice.
You tell him everything and he doesn't understand the impact of it.
