because I think otherwise the wealth gap can increase.
It's interesting in the research, 18% of Gen Z employees have got equity as part of their last pay rise or bonus, and that's versus 3% of Gen X and baby boomers.
These Gen Z employees will keep advancing in their careers and will be more senior.
And I think that we are just seeing this wave of this younger generation come in, sort of expecting more in terms of...
equity so my hope is that that really sort of changes things in quite a material way and the norm is just you know equity as part of remuneration if you want to attract the best talent.
I think the other thing that I would say is you know in the US there seems to be this culture of employee equity that has been around for much longer and it was interesting I was talking to a director who is American who's come to New Zealand and she was observing she said
It's fascinating in the States for middle managers and above, it is the big thing you're negotiating is not your base pay.
It's your equity.
It's your incentive.
That is the big thing you're negotiating.
She said in New Zealand, we just haven't sort of got that culture yet.
We're quite fixated on wages.
And yes, wages are important for paying the bills.
Do not get me wrong on that.
But we do need a mindset where we are thinking about that upside, thinking about that equity.
And I think it's coming.
So I'm excited to see how that translates in the next decade.
And it can really change behaviour.
